A letter from Jean Fogelberg
In the two years since Dan died, I’ve received thousands of letters and emails: consoling, commiserating, reminiscing, and mourning. Many of the emails had questions, asking about everything from Dan’s favorite foods to his religious beliefs. And since the “Love In Time” CD was released, there have been even more questions raised, many pertaining to the songs and their lyrics.
I wish I had time to thank each person for their support, and to answer the many questions individually, but I simply don’t. So in our October newsletter we asked Dan’s fans to fill in a form and submit their questions. Then Fred and I went through them and chose the most frequently asked questions.
I’m not comfortable doing interviews, but talking from home and being familiar with the questions helped a bit. Mostly though, it was Fred’s easy style, making me feel like we were old chums sitting down over a cup of coffee, that made me positively chatty. Fred should work for the CIA.
Thanks, Fred.
Happy New Year, everyone.
Jean Fogelberg
A Note From Fred
In early December, as I was recuperating from bypass surgery, I had the opportunity to interview Dan Fogelberg’s wife, Jean. We had a very personal conversation about Dan’s last days, who he was as a husband and best friend, and the release of his “Love in Time” cd that features songs Dan recorded during his final days.
The interview is based on questions that Jean received from Dan’s many fans from around the world. And, in the FM Odyssey tradition, there is plenty of music woven in with the conversation, giving the interview a nice, pleasant flow.
Spending the 35 to 40 hours necessary to create this piece gave me an incredible appreciation for the woman Dan loved most, and helped with my personal healing process as well. When all was finished and I had hit the last key stroke, I made my way downstairs from my studio to the main house and saw my beautiful lit-up Christmas tree. I felt a sense of peace and closure about Dan that I had not yet experienced. This interview was exactly what I needed to move on. Like in Dan’s lyrics, “And as I made my way back home, the snow turned into rain”.
It is my hope that you enjoy listening as much as Jean and I enjoyed putting this together for you.
Sincerely,
Fred Migliore

I was pleased in listening to the podcast, about Dan Fogelberg and his wife Jean. I’m a great fan of Dan’s, since I was in High School. Now that I’m an 52 year old man, I still enjoy and feel at peace when I put on Dan’s records and CD’s. I miss his music. He will always be aq legacy in my life, thank you.

Fantastic interview! Jean Fogelberg is a joy…Dan was a lucky guy to have found her. It sounds like he found true happiness in life and that is a wonderful thing and much deserved. God bless all in 2010!

The interview with Jean Fogelberg conducted by Fred Migliore was outstanding. Since Dan’s passing, Jean has been extremely generous in providing us all with special glimpses into the life she shared with this tremendous musical artist and human being. God Bless! Nick Monteparo, Melbourne, Florida

A wonderful interview. Dan was a special human being, so gifted with talent and a beautiful soul. I was touched by Jean’s answers to the questions, especially the one about Dan’s one true love, so easy to just say how great she felt reading that, but she said Dan had 4 true loves, such a honest, humble answer. She is a great lady. Thank you.

Great interview! There are more questions that I think we all would like to ask. Will there be future interviews with Jean?
Thanks
December 29th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
Thank you Jean and Fred for bringing me back again with Dan for awhile today. You talked about Dan coming out on the stage after huge rain at Red Rocks and it would just stop? It did and it would. I sat in the 10th row listening to Hickory Grove and the River totally turned on to Dans music. No drugs needed, Just Dan. It was so magical. Greg E. Pavel Chisago City, MN

Jean and Fred,
Thank you both so much. I have been missing Dan so much this holiday season. I could listen to Jean speak for hours upon hours about Dan’s life and his songs. It is also fairly obvious what a kind and intelligent woman Jean is and why Dan loved her so much. I really love Dan and miss him. I hope that I will be able to thank him personally when my time comes to leave this mortal life. Happy New Year to you both.

I’d like to congratulate you on your impressive explanation of Dan’s new CD. It brought back memories of his concert at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, WI.
I was fortunate enough to have front row seats in the orchestra pit and Dan was talking to the crowd about celebrating his 25th Anniversary of performing. I shouted out “25 more years Dan” and when he heard it he became breathless. He looked at me and said “you have to be kidding”! From that moment on we exchanged a few more lines and he even mentioned to the audience what a great time he was having chatting between songs! It was a terrific experience shared with a marvelous musician!! Dan, you’ll live in our hearts forever.

Listing to this podcast made me feel so thankful to Jean Fogelberg for sharing such personal stories to Dan’s fans. I have been a fan of Dan Fogelberg ever since my mother first played Run for the Roses for me when I was younger. Since then over the years I have been expanding my Dan Fogelberg music collection. I love the songs on this new album and all of his songs hold a special place in my heart. My mother died of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and his music helped my mother as well as myself during her illness and after. His music will always bring peace to me and I thank Jean for letting us in to her life for a brief moment and my heart weighs heavy when I hear her talking about Dan. Dan Fogelberg’s music will always be with me and I thank him for that.

Thank you so much for this interview, both Jean and Fred. It was wonderful to hear your voice, Jean and the answers to some of our questions. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers, Jean. And, Fred, glad to see you are on the mend! Both of you take care and have a very Happy New Year! We will be with you, Jean through 2010, keeping Dan’s legacy alive!!! Bless you!
PS: this interview would make a great fund raiser for the PCF!!! HINT, HINT!

Thanks, Fred, for the great interview with Jean. I enjoyed it immensely. I tried to add the feed to iTunes via your link, but only part 3 of the interview is added to the Music Yak feed in iTunes. How can I get parts 1 and 2 to download into iTunes?

I think this is just what I needed also, to be able to find closure—–because my heart still hurts, but is getting better.

Wow, Wow, Wow!!!! Thank you Jean and Fred for this wonderful interview. During the past two years I have been obsessed and blessed with listening to Dan’s music, purchased all of his CD’s (except Portraits) which I still hope to obtain, Fred’s interview with Dan, watched all of the youtube videos numerous times and rarely do I listen to any other music except Dan’s CD’s. Your interview only confirms conclusions I had made about Dan. I admire that he did it his way and in doing so left a legacy of music that in my opinion will never be surpassed. I never had the opportunity to see one of Dan’s concerts in person in this life but know that I will see him on the “other side.” At age 65, and with inspiration from Dan, I am now learning to play guitar and piano. The Love In Time CD is great and especially the song “The Colors of EVE”. Thank you again for sharing with all of us Dan fans.
December 30th, 2009 at 8:13 am
Thank you so much Fred…and Jean, words cannot express how wonderful it was to hear your voice. I’ve been a huge fan of Dan’s for about 25 years but I’ve only had the pleasure of seeing him perform twice…once at the Warwick Musical Theater in Rhode Island and the second in Colorado. His death was a real shock to me and it’s taken me quite some time to accept it….he’s written the soundtrack to many of my life’s experiences it seems. I still haven’t brought myself to be able to purchase “Love In Time” nor listen to it online.
When I got notification of this interview through the website in my inbox…I ran right over. I’m going to go buy “Love In Time” now…thank you so much Jean for sharing some very personal moments with us, especially about his life right up until his death. I’ve never emailed or written, I wasn’t sure what to say…surely our pain as fans could not compare to yours as his wife. Thank you so much.
~Blessings,
Robin

Dear Fred,
It was on a snowy evening in 1972 after Christmas day when I was downstairs doing my homework and listening to the radio on my 1947 RCA Victorola that
my Grandparents gave me for Christmas. That evening changed my life! I heard
a song called “Netherlands” It was this song that created my personal incentive to write. I was 11 years old at this time & I’ve been writing ever since. I have created a Poetic Trilogy called “The Light & the Fire” The fourth book is an Anthology of the previous three. All of this was able to be created because Dan
touched my heart with his musical wonder and exemplary skill. Throughout the years I wrote in private & 11 years ago I was suggested to create a book of Poetry
based on another friends opinion and exposure. It was in 1997 when I started this project and I decided to create this in Tribute to Dan. A number of years went by & I became friends with Deborah Jenelik who was his friend and website creator on TheLivingLegacy. I even flew down to her hometown to go to a Houseparty she had at her home. It was wonderful! I was sincerely touched by this and at the same time I had numerous creative bursts in writing. The thing that amazed me the most was and still is…….. Whenever I listen to Dan’s music, I wonder, wander then plant my feet, I begin to write verses in rhyme, short, long and neat.
I will forever hold the wish to someday meet this man and thank him for the gifts he gave to all of us. I would love to be able to print up the books and send them
to Jean if there was a way to send them. I Thank you for this opportunity to share this short story with you! May you be well in spirit and bring in the New Year with a Smile all the while!

Good Morning,
I was just wondering if there was a way i could download the podcast with Jean Fogelberg. I do not have high speed internet so trying to listen to it online is unbearable. If it is not available for download is there a place where i could purchase a copy of the interview?
Thank you,
Paul

I as well as all “DANFANS” deeply appreciate and love such insight into “Love In Time” as well as a bit of his and Jeans life. Being moved by Dan’s music countless times since purchasing “HOME FREE” in the earlly 70′s I can simply say that we all have been blessed with his immense talent, and the body of work that he gave us all will be something I will cherish and continue to hold dear. I am looking forward to adding this interview to my collection. THANK YOU so very much. Also the mention of another release is something I will be very much looking forward to. Dan is and will always be my modern day Minstrel. EVER ON, Chuck Dratwick

You should make your podcasts available for download, not just listening online. My wife would love to listen to these podcasts, but we happen to live in a broadband dead zone. We have our Internet service via cellular modem, which of course means we have a monthly download limit.
Normally I just download things for her at work and then transfer them to her computer. However, I cannot do this with these podcasts. Really, you shouldn’t even call them podcasts if they can’t be downloaded. Everybody else in the world makes their podcasts available for download – why don’t you?

Wonderful interview…..I LOVED listening to Dan Fogelberg’s music when I was in high school. I’m from the same hometown that Dan is from so maybe that made me feel closer to his music??? I even met him one time at Jim’s Steakhouse in downtown Peoria and I was speechless!!!! Made my year!!!!
December 30th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Fred, thank you. Dan was a remarkable and talented man, it’s really heartwarming to hear Jean talk about their relationship and songs. Their relationship is what dreams are made of.
Dan’s cd, Love In Time, will be cherished always. Please thank Jean for sharing her thoughts and comments with the fans and your radio audience.
I’ve always loved Dan’s music but I never knew who the artist was, literally, because whenever I heard his music it was rare that the djs would announce the name or title of the song or I missed it after the continuous playing of a group of songs.
Dan’s music was part of my teenage years, his love songs, music and lyrics touched my heart and soul. Thank you again for making this interview possible.
Dan’s music will always be a part of my life and now he’s singing and playing in Heaven. What better way to spend eternity.
Sincerely,
~sylvia withrow~

I just finished listening to the Jean Fogelberg interview. It was interesting, and I am so glad she shared her memories with us. I felt I would have liked to hear more of Jean and just portions of the songs, since I already have the CD, as many of Dan’s fans do. Her portion of the interview was not enough time for me, but I am happy that you were able to get an interview about my favorite artist/songwriter of all times. She is a strong and beautiful person, inside and out, and I now know why Dan loved her. She was so lucky to have the time she did with him, as he was with her. I hope she continues to share her stories with us through his web site and more interviews with you, perhaps.
Thank you Fred…I am so glad you are doing well. Thank you Jean for keeping Dan’s memory alive. I will continue to play and love his music always. Good luck with your web site and all your future plans.

Dear Fred and Jean,
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Your interview has helped me with closure concerning Dan’s passing. I have been a fan for years and now my 20 year-old son is a huge fan also. Bless you Jean for your courage and kindness by speaking to all of us. I can tell you were speaking from your heart. Dan’s last CD is fabulous and profound. Like Jean, I cried and still do when I listen to “Birds”. Peace and Love to both of you.

I have been a fan of Dan Fogelberg’s music since the 70′s. I was lucky enough to see him in concert numerous times and at least 5 of the concerts were at Red Rocks. I just want to thank his wife Jean for taking the time to share so much in this interview, what a special lady she is. Dan was one of the greates musicians and wrote the most amazing lyrics. I met some lifelong friends at Red Rocks and we shared a love of Dan’s music. Dan Fogelberg is truly missed but he lives on through his music and his lovely wife Jean.
Thank you for sharing,

nature of the game is my favorite. there is absolutely NOTHING like JUST Dan and his guitar.
I can imagine how Jean must’ve felt when she learned that Dan Fogelberg had been listening to her perform. Being a professional musician myself, here in Durango Colorado (which is 2 towns over from where he lived here in SW Colorado), I often wondered what I would do if I spotted Dan in the audience….probably would not have been able to continue performing!! But that’s probably because I was a great fan, where Jean said she didn’t know that much about him. Thank you Jean for sharing your personal thoughts with us all.
I always felt like maybe I knew Dan in a past life as we had some things in common – I am from Connecticut and have very fond memories of New England, and I am of Scottish and Swedish descent. His music really influenced my style of expressing myself in my singing, and I just can’t believe he is gone. Love you, friend!

Thank you so much for the interview with Jean Fogelberg. She is one gracious lady and so kind to share her memories with us. The only bad part about the interview was that it ended too soon. Jean, you rock!
Will this broadcast also be packaged for sale?
Thank you,
Jan

A painstaking commercial for the new album. I wanted to hear a juicy interview, but I got 20 second spats about Dan Fogelberg sailing in Maine?
Shame.
December 31st, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I loved this interview. I had purchased the CD the day it was released and have enjoyed it but this interview makes the CD more personal. How kind and generous of Dan’s loving wife to share such personal thoughts about the man she clearly adored. I have loved Dan Fogelberg’s music since I heard the Souveniers album in 1978. His music has helped me deal with joy and tragedy and remains, forever, my favorite artist for his haunting music and expressive lyrics. Thank you for a moving experience and all the best to you, Jean.

Thank you so much for sharing this interview! It was so nice to put a voice with all of the stories that Jean has posted on the website. Dan’s music has been such an important part of my life from an early age when I sat outside of my brother’s room and listened to his stereo playing “To the Morning.” I purchased your interview with Dan, and I listen to it often. You did a fantastic job with that interview, and you duplicated the result with this interview of Jean. I just wanted to say thank you. And, as the interview started I was hoping that you would ask about the possibility of more music being released, so I was so happy to hear that we might be able to look forward to other gems in the future.
Thank you again!
Sincerely,
Phil Gentry

Fred-
Thank you fhr sharing this wonderful, heart-wrenching interview with Jean Fogelberg. Dan died the same year as my mother, and even though I did not “know” Dan, I loved him and his music; the loss was deeply felt and added to the giref I was already experiencing. This interview and the previous interviews and cd have been a beautiful tribute to Dan. How unselfish of Jean to answer some profound and personal questions! What a wonderful legacy for both of them.
Best of health to you, Fred.
Sincerely, Lenore

Thank you so much for the Jean Fogelberg interview. My wife and I just listened to the entire broadcast in front of the fire on a cold New Year’s Day. What a treat. His music has been such an important part of our 30 years of marriage and we both were deeply touched. I’ve been grieving almost daily for over 2 years now, and this helped bring closure. I look forward to one day seeing Dan again on the other side, but in the meantime I’m looking forward to more of his music. I had no idea that was in the works! Thank you again.

Thanks for doing and sharing this wonderful interview and discussion with Jean.
I am sure that your easy going voice certainly made the whole session very pleasant and relaxing for Jean – and it certainly showed.

Happy New Year to you and also to Jean !

I was one of those who learned long after the fact of Dan’s passing. was listening to “Another Auld Lang Syne” this Christmas, when was so saddened to hear the announcer describe the “late Dan Fogelberg.” i didn’t know he’d
gone. had heard of his cancer diagnosis, but that was a while ago. wow. even as i write this, and as his newest album finishes, i am again so sad to remember he’s gone. i have almost all of his cd’s. his music was a big part of my life while i was in college. had the good fortune of seeing him in concert several times. i’m so flad i did. was warmed to know he’d moved to and settled in my home state of Maine.
i could ramble on as i reminisce, but won’t. it’s too sad to do that. but, wanted to leave my thoughts with his wife, Jean. i think i was in love with him, myself. Bless you, Jean, and may your life be peaceful.

Hi Fred,
Thankyou for all the work you do in publicising Dan Fogelberg’s music. As a fan in the UK we hear little of him on the radio. I really appreciated the opportunuty to listen to the interview with Jean, but is it possible to make it available as a down load for an MP3 player? I am not able to sit for an hour at a time listening at the computer but on my MP3 player I could listen while out walking or doing household chores.
Thanks

thanks you fred and Jean for doing this session. I had the wonderful opporunity to work briefly with Jean who provided me guidance and access to her personal photos. Her photos were attached to the foreground of my original song, which was specifically written and dedicated to Dan. Hearing her voice placed me one more step closer to her and to my musical hero. I’ll always be grateful.

Early in 1977 i discovered Dan Fogelberg. As a guitarist/writer/performer he made a indelible mark on me and his music moved me to a new plateau in my quest to be all i can be with a guitar in hand. I admired he ,the man the music ,the poet. I had a chance to meet him one night backstage and he graciously spent a half hour talking music, guitars and life in general.I thanked him for his time and the gift of music that he gave to all of us.I like all his fans grieved after his death.i just bought love in time as a gift to myself for this christmas and it is truly the best gift i could have recieved.I have played it everyday since i opened the jewel case. What a joy to hear him and as usual he has blow me away with his talent. It has been hard to choke back the tears when i think he is gone to the other side but they are tears of joy . I really enjoyed this interview with Jean….it was very informative and has given me new insight into these songs …thank you both Stephen Murray

I can’t thank you enough, Jean, for sharing Dan’s final years and moments with us. As fans, we all felt that Dan was one of our friends because we grew with him during the years. My time with him began in 1975 when I was working in a record store (ironically, named “Odyssey”) and his Capture Angel album arrived at the store. As employees, we would each get to pick any album in the store to play over the store system each day. As I was the one who opened the case and removed the albums to put them on the store display, I became curious of who this guy, Fogelberg, was and what he sounded like. So, I picked his album when it was my turn that day. After picking the same album for several days thereafter. The words “I used to think of myself as a soldier, holding his own against impossible odds…” took me immediately back to my childhood of playing Army in the backyards of my friends. And I realized that this guy, Dan, was a kindred spirit. I now have all of his albums and have played each one over and over and over again as our lives seemed to follow a similar path. Just for example, in early 87, I began to be drawn back to my roots of country music as I was raised in a small town in eastern North Carolina. Suddenly, Dan released “High Country Snows” and I was floored. Here was my “brother” saying to me “I’m right there with ya friend!”

Dear Fred, this interview is an amazing gift. For all your work, for your sensitivity, for your elegant presentation. Just a wonderful blessing for all who feel the incredible connection to Dan. I thank you, I bless you and Jean, and hope for you that this gift will bring back to you joy and the highest possible good for your life. Deann Ward

I’ve listened to Dan’s music since my college sweetheart introduced me to him in 1976. I was hooked right away and never let go. It was after one of his concerts at the Capital Theater in Passaic NJ, that she first said “I love you” and to this day (we split about a year and half later) I cannot listen to Dan’s music without thinking of her. He had the unique talent of singing directly to and connecting with his listener on such a personal level and still does to this day. He is surely missed, and Jean’s work along with the Living Legacy will allow us to maintain that connection to Dan and hopefully brings many new listeners into the world of this magnificent Troubador.
PS Your interview with Dan was such a delight and so insightful, it is something that I will treasure and listen to often.

Loved the interview. Dan was probably my favorite singer and still is for all practical purposes. Jean, you must be a very special person and my heart goes out to you more than you will ever know.
I saw Dan perform several times over the years and it was always a special treat. There will never by another one like him. Although I did not know him, I have mourned his passing like many others have. Those of us who knew his music felt like we kind of knew him. I always liked that I never read about him in fan magazines. I felt he was a person of integrity as well as monumental talent. He kept his private life private but shared the beautiful parts of his spirit and soul through his wonderful music. Jean, God bless you and thank you for what you are doing to keep his legacy going, although it must be difficult for you. I wish you all the best for a wonderful life.

fred, i cannot even find the words to tell you the magnificent job you did with this interview with jean. it was the greatest gift you could have given to his fans. i miss the man terribly and his music, but love in time will have to satisfy me until the possibility of another cd comes out that jean might surprise us with. he was the most talented musician and song writer that kept me a fan for over 30 years. jean appeared to be a very gracious lady with her soft voice and the love in it for dan, you could hear it every time she spoke of him. i truly appreciate her willingness to talk to dans fans and tell us more about the man dan was. thank you so much for doing this for all of us.

Thank you Fred and thank you Jean. I was a Fogelberg fan in my youth and I was truly touched by his rendition of Neil’s “Birds”. And being a long time admirer of the New Mexico countryside and having long time friends in the Sante Fe area, I was pleased to hear he found his true love there. And Jean…oh how I admire her learning songs(as I am also a singer/song writer) the way she did from the radio, by ear, and having the gumption to get on stage and play…just awesome. I can imagine Dan’s pleasure at seeing her perform on that day they met.

Thank you Jean and Fred so much for the wonderful interview
“Jean Fogelberg-Love In Time.” Hearing from Jean about her
life and times with Dan and the special insights only she can
share with all his faithful fans…is comforting and so meaningful.
Since I first listened to “Home Free” in the early 70s Dan has
remained my favorite artist and songwriter and I can’t put into
words the impact upon my life that Dan’s music has meant to
me and no doubt millions of others. Rarely does an artist come
along whose God given gifts are so personally and unselfishly
passed on to others and to this world. Dan and his music are
forever in the hearts of his devoted fans and the scores of future
fans in generations to come. Thank again Jean for all you do
and all you give.
